Panthers Run Past Matadors For Preseason WNIT Win

Lindner, Kostowicz both big in the win

NEW ORLEANSJenny Lindner netted a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Milwaukee women's basketball team to a 58-50 win over CSUN Saturday afternoon from Lakefront Arena in both team's final game in the Preseason WNIT.

The Panthers (1-2) built a big lead early and were able to fend off the Matadors (0-4) with solid play across the board down the stretch.

"That was a really good win for our program," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "I think this really shows where our defense is. The fact that we're able to hold some teams to under 60 points is a huge effort on the part of our players. They (CSUN) have a post player who will be up to be an All-American candidate and we were able to hold her to seven points.

"It was a really good day for us to learn from some previous losses."

Lindner led all players with 19 points and 11 rebounds to go with a pair of steals for her 13th career double-double.

Steph Kostowicz continued her impressive start to the season with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.

Tessa Boagni and Serafina Maulupe each had 10 points to lead the way for the Matadors, while Channon Fluker – who finished with 33 points and 20 rebounds, going over 1,000 career points in yesterday's game – was held to just seven points and six rebounds on 2-10 shooting.

After a quick 10-4 start by CSUN, Milwaukee responded in a huge way.

Sydney Staver got things going with a three-pointer, followed by another triple, this time by Kostowicz. Jamie Reit hit a pair of free throws to make it 12-11 Milwaukee late in the first, giving UWM a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Lindner then got her scoring going in a big way. The senior netted two-straight layups, including one to just beat the buzzer on a nifty feed from Kostowicz as the Panthers led 16-11 after one. Lindner then opened the scoring for UWM in the second with a three ball and another lay in to make in nine-straight points by the Neillsville, Wis., native.

McKaela Schmelzer got on the board with a bucket of her own with 2:42 to go in the half to give the Panthers their largest lead of the night at 30-15.

CSUN continued to try a variety of approaches in an effort to get back in the game, but Milwaukee was able to keep the Matadors at arm's length the rest of the way.

"I thought our ball movement was very good (today)," Rechlicz said. "Our team is really starting to become unselfish and find the open people. Jenny had the hot hand for a while, so we found a way to get Jenny the ball. Steph was able to score inside when they went to a smaller lineup, and we got Steph the ball. It was nice to see the ball moving from one side of the court to another.

"I was really proud of just how we translated from one game to the next. I thought today we got to see some of who we can be as a team moving forward."

Milwaukee will return home to play host to Loyola Tuesday evening at 7pm from the Klotsche Center.
