Panthers Suffer Heartbreaker At UIC

Dore with 54 assists in the loss

CHICAGO – The Milwaukee volleyball team nearly pulled off an incredible comeback, only to fall short to UIC in extras, 3-2, Sunday afternoon from the Flames Athletic Center.

Down 2-1, the Panthers (11-15, 4-8 Horizon) rallied back to force a fifth set, only see UIC (16-9, 7-5 Horizon) walk away with the win, 24-26, 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 16-14.

"Our team fought hard and performed better than yesterday, we just couldn't quite close things out," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We had a great game plan and executed it well. The team fought hard and we had some big individual performances. Points came really hard for us in that fifth set and we just couldn't get over the hump."

Four Panthers reached double-digit digs on the day, led by Mykie Olsen with a match-high 20. Lexie Uselding finished with 13, while Kylie Wilks added 12, Jenn Dore 10 and Kailynn Mongan another nine.

Bridget Wallenberger had a team-high 14 kills for Milwaukee. Wilks had 12 kills for yet another double-double. Carmen Heilemann put up a big performance in her second start of the season with a season-high 11 kills, while Jess Kalous also had 11 kills.

Dore also had a double-double with a match-high 54 assists.

The first four sets couldn't decide this one, as it all came down to a deciding fifth set.

UIC jumped out early to a 7-2 lead, only to see Milwaukee roar back. Wallenberger started the comeback with a big kill, followed by a solo block to ignite her team. Wilks then followed with another Panther kill to force a UIC timeout. The comeback continued and a block by Heilemann and Kalous knotted the set up at 10-10. The Panthers actually grabbed the lead at 12-11, before things were tied back up at 14-all. UIC was able to find two points in a row to walk away with the win.

Milwaukee finished Sunday's match with a 70-62 edge in digs, while UIC had a 72-63 nod in kills.

The Panthers close out the home portion of their season next weekend, hosting Northern Kentucky and IUPUI at the Klotsche Center next Friday and Saturday.
