Vikings Halt Shorthanded Panthers Win Streak

Milwaukee split weekend road trip against league leaders

MILWAUKEEBridget Wallenberger hammered home a match-high 19 kills by it wasn't enough as the Milwaukee volleyball team came up just short on the road, 3-1, against Cleveland State Saturday afternoon from Woodling Gymnasium.

One day after a dramatic win at league-leading Oakland, the Panthers – hampered by a fluke injury to a key player – couldn't complete the weekend sweep in the loss, 25-19, 20-25, 25-14, 25-18.

"This was a really tough match," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "You always want to be at full strength, especially against a team as good as Cleveland State. Unfortunately, we weren't there today and it showed. We had some people really step up and play big minutes, and I'm certainly proud of our team's fight. But we are a young team and that showed as things wore on."

Jenn Dore had another impressive outing for Milwaukee (11-13, 4-6 Horizon) with 54 assists and 11 digs – her fifth double-double of the season.

Wallenberger also continued her strong play against the defending league champs, racking up 19 kills, while hitting nearly .400 percent, to go with her four blocks.

Offensively, Kylie Wilks and Caitlin Schultz each had nine kills, while Louise Kiekhofer and Jess Kalous each added eight.

Mykie Olsen once again led the defense with 17 digs. Lexie Uselding had another 12 digs, while Kailynn Mongan and Wilks each notched eight.

Gina Kilner's 38 assists and 11 kills led the way for Cleveland State (14-7, 7-3 Horizon).

After dropping a close first set, Milwaukee bounced back in set two. Tied at 15-all, UWM rattled off four-straight points to jump ahead 19-15, forcing a CSU timeout. The Vikings responded to tie things back up at 19-19, before Milwaukee had the last laugh with another big run. Wallenberger started things off before Schultz and Kalous closed things out with back-to-back kills to close things out on a 6-1 run to knot things up at 1-1.

From there, Milwaukee just couldn't quite find their rhythm, as CSU took the next two to put an end to the Panthers' win streak.

UWM actually had more digs (63-61), kills (61-55) and assists (60-52) in this one, while the Vikings claimed a slight edge in blocks (8-7) and aces (4-0).

The Panthers return to action next Saturday with a home contest against rival Green Bay at 4pm from the Klotsche Center.
