Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Comeback Falls Just Short Against Oakland

Lindner finishes with a team-high 21 points

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's basketball team twice erased sizeable deficits in the fourth quarter before coming up just short, 75-73, to Oakland University Wednesday evening from the Klotsche Center.

Milwaukee (11-5, 3-2 Horizon) had a few looks at the basket on the game's final possession, but just couldn't get the ball to fall in the narrow defeat.

Oakland (9-6, 3-1 Horizon) was hot from the floor all night long, including connecting on 78 percent of their attempts in the fourth quarter and finished the game shooting 51.9 percent in back-and-forth contest.

"I thought we competed, and that's what we need to do game in and game out is put ourselves in a position to win," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We were there. We just had way too many defensive lapses. We can't let other teams come into our gym and shoot 50 percent - especially inside the paint...and then we didn't shoot as well.

"We had a lot of great looks, especially in the first quarter and I thought we could have blown the game open then. But, a lot of credit to Oakland. They are such a good team and they're well coached. I knew this would be a tough game, for sure."

Jenny Lindner led Milwaukee with 21 points and four rebounds, while Alexis Lindstrom continued her hot shooting with another 18 points (5-8 from behind the arc) to go with her season-high six rebounds.

Steph Kostowicz was battled through a congested post area to finish with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Sierra Ford-Washington also finished in double figures with 11 points and seven assists.

Leah Somerfield led Oakland with a career-high 25 points.

Milwaukee came out of the gates strong and was the clear aggressor in the first quarter, but led by just one after the first 10 minutes at 11-10.

After Lindner started the second quarter with a layup and Lindstrom followed with three free throws, it looked like the Panthers assertion would continue. A true three-pointer from Lindstrom followed by a lay in by Lizzie Odegard made it 21-14 UWM and forced a timeout from the visitors. But, Oakland was able to respond with a 7-0 run of its own and it was a dogfight from there on out.

Milwaukee again made a push in the start of quarter number three, going up 43-36 after a fast-break three by Bailey Farley. But the Golden Grizzlies were able to claw back, tying the game up at 45-all with just over two minutes to go.

The tables switched in the fourth, as OU went on a 9-0 run to claim a 58-50 lead just 1:12 into the final period. UWM was up to the task though, erasing that lead in the blink of an eye. Ford-Washington started it with a pair of baskets, followed by a pair of charges drawn by Milwaukee. The Panthers capitalized on those turnovers and another three from Lindstrom gave UWM a 59-58 lead at the 6:54 mark in the fourth.

With just 33 second left on the clock, Oakland held a five-point edge following a pair of free throws. Lindner scored a bucket and a free throw on an and-one to cut the lead to two. After two more OU free throws, Kostowicz drilled a three from the top of the key with 15 seconds left to make it one-point game.

Nola Anderson went 1-for-2 from the line to make it 75-73 Golden Grizzlies with just 12 seconds remaining. Milwaukee was able to get three contested attempts off, but all fell just short before the final buzzer in the tight game.

UWM finished the game shooting 42.4 percent from the floor and went 9-for-10 from the charity stripe. Milwaukee also out-rebounded its opponent, 36-30, and finished the game with 19 assists – the third time in the last four games they have finished with at least that many.

It's a very short turnaround for the Panthers, as they get ready to host Detroit Friday morning at 11 am from the Klotsche Center for Milwaukee's annual School Day Game with over 2,000 area students expected in attendance.
