Fourth-Quarter Turnaround Sparks Big Panther Win

Lindner nets 1,000th career point in the victory

MILWAUKEE – Finishing the game on a 26-10 run, the Milwaukee women's basketball had a big bounce-back win Friday afternoon, taking down Detroit Mercy, 81-69, in front of 2,416 on the annual school day game held inside the Klotsche Center.

UWM (12-5, 4-2 Horizon) flipped a four-point deficit into a 14-point lead in the blink of an eye. The Panthers shot .571 from the floor in the decisive fourth quarter, including 3-5 from behind the arc and a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, all while stymying Detroit Mercy's (7-9, 3-2 Horizon) previously hot offense.

"It was awesome to see our leadership come together (in the fourth quarter)," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "Sierra Ford-Washington, Alexis Lindstrom, Jenny Lindner, Bailey Farley…I was really proud of them. They locked into the defense. That's what they decided to do; they wanted to really pick up the defensive effort and they did that."

Offensively, Jenny Lindner led UWM with 20 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. The junior also netted her the 1,000th point of her Panther career, becoming just the 20th player to do that in program history and doing so in just her 79th game to become the seventh-fastest to that figure in Panther history.

Sierra Ford-Washington did everything for Milwaukee Friday, scoring 16 points to go with nine points, eight assists and three steals for the near triple-double.

Bailey Farley notched season highs in both points (17) and rebounds (seven), with the 17 points also tying her career high.

Lizzie Odegard also was big, coming off the bench for 13 points and a career-best eight rebounds.

Preseason Horizon League Player of the Year Rosanna Reynolds led the Titans with 16 points and 12 assists.

Heading into the fourth quarter, Milwaukee held a two-point edge and carried some momentum after a solid finish to the third. Detroit Mercy quickly grabbed that momentum back as Brittney Jackson drilled a three to start the period, followed by a Reynolds bucket and two layups by Brianne Cohen to quickly give UDM a 59-55 edge.

With the game on the ropes, the Panthers responded with outstanding poise.

It started with a layup by Steph Kostowicz, who was limited to just three points in a season-low 17 minutes. After the two teams traded free throws, Ford-Washington tied it at 61-all on a jumper in the lane, followed by five-straight by Odegard, including a huge three pointer from the left wing to force a UDM timeout.

With the packed house now on its feet, the Panthers continued their run. Odegard scored another on a put back and a three from the corner by Lindstrom erupted the Klotsche fans and gave UWM a 73-62 lead with just 1:43 remaining.

Milwaukee iced the game with eight-straight made free throws and finished the game 19-of-21 from the line to improve upon its already sixth-place ranking in the nation in that category.

Detroit Mercy finished the game with 11-made threes and 21 assists, but went just 6-for-17 from the line, including 4-for-9 in the fourth quarter.

UWM had a huge rebounding edge Friday, hauling in 47 boards and limiting UDM to just 22.

Lindner came into the game needing just 13 points to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for her career and was hot early. The Neillsville, Wis. native scored seven in the opening quarter to keep Milwaukee at pace with the Titans' hot shooting and then reached the milestone with 2:06 remaining in the first half on a three from the top of the key on an assist from Farley.

"I didn't know exactly what basket scored the 1000th point, but I knew the amount I needed just from teammates and coaches telling me," Lindner said. "When I looked up at the board I saw and was just like 'Oh, I got it.'

"But, that's not what I was worried about. We need this win. We had to bounce back from our loss versus Oakland and it was a huge win tonight. Our team – everyone stepped up when we needed them to. It was really a team win."

Milwaukee now has a few days to prepare for Tuesday's contest against UIC, which will be televised live on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel. That game is set to tip off at 7 pm from the Klotsche Center.
