Masdevall Masip Claims Title In Final Day At Minnesota

Panthers won 20 total matches over three-day tournament

MINNEAPOLIS – Freshman Berta Masdevall Masip was crowned champion of her flight to headline a strong final day of action for the Milwaukee tennis team at the Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center Sunday.

The Panthers closed out their three days of action at the national tournament with five more wins to run their total to 20 for the weekend.

Masdevall Masip was right at the front for the Panthers. The newcomer continued her undefeated run at the tournament with a straight-sets win over Maria Pandya of South Dakota, 6-4, 6-2, to claim the title of her flight. Masdevall Masip now has improved her overall record to 6-1 after just her first two collegiate outings.

UWM continued its winning ways with two more wins from another newcomer. Freshman Nicole Clarke won both of her matches against foes from North Dakota, both in straight sets in her first weekend of action as a Panther.

Labina Petrovska closed out her flight with a strong showing, taking down Mimi Yunker, 6-2, 6-3.

The Panthers also did well in doubles play Sunday. One day after their big win over Minnesota, Hayley Marshall and Alysa Straub were right back at it was a 6-3 win over South Dakota State's pairing. Milwaukee nearly claimed yet another win over a Big Ten foe as Masha Lobanova and Clarke came up just short against Iowa's duo, 7-6 (3).

Milwaukee is now off until Oct. 7-8 when they head to the Warhawk Fall Invite hosted by Whitewater.
