Panthers Sweep Raiders, Improve To 2-0 In League Play

Dore with 40 assists in three-set win

MILWAUKEE – Jenn Dore dished out 40 assists as the Milwaukee volleyball team swept past Wright State, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20, Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (8-5, 2-0 Horizon) were efficient all match long, with each player contributing in keys ways.

"It really feels good (to start league play 2-0) and this team is getting better every time we play," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "I'm really happy about that. People are learning as we go. We've had some challenges in games that we maybe can't simulate in practice so I'm really proud of them for being able to make those adjustments in the game."

Dore just missed out on another double-double, adding nine digs to go with her 40 assists in the strong showing.

Defensively, Teagan Taylor led the way with 13 digs, followed closely by Mykie Olsen (11), Kylie Wilks (9), Dore and Myanna Ruiz (7).

On the offensive side, Caitlin Schultz had a team-high 13 kills. Jess Kalous and Bridget Wallenberger each had nine, while Wilks added another eight.

Alannah Lemming led the way for Wright State (6-9, 1-1 Horizon) with 14 kills.

Milwaukee mounted a big lead in the opening set, going up 17-10 after an ace by Dore. Wright State was able to make a late push, closing the Panther lead to just three late. But, back-to-back kills by Schultz gave UWM the opening lead.

Things were more even throughout the majority of the second, with the two teams tying up at 20-20 late. From there, it was all Milwaukee. The Panthers rattled off the next five points, capping the win with a block from Kalous – one of her five for the match.

After the break, the Panthers continued their winning ways in the third – methodically pulling away from the Raiders in the final set. Tied at 9-9, UWM got three-straight points – highlighted by an ace from Olsen – and would never relinquish that lead. WSU got as close as 21-19 late, but Milwaukee once again finished well to head home with the sweep.

"I felt like we started out each set well and we ended well," Johnson said. "We had some stuff in between that was a little different and we had to adapt, but I thought we did a much better job tonight finishing each set."

Milwaukee finished the match with 52 digs to Wright State's 41. The Panthers also out hit their opponents on the day, .268 to .154. UWM also had three more service aces on the day than its opponent, tallying five in the sweep.

The Panthers continue their four-game home stand next weekend, playing host to UIC on Saturday before a Sunday match against in-state rival Green Bay. Both matches are scheduled for 4 pm.
