Third-Set Rally Helps Milwaukee Sweep UIC

Panthers now 3-0 in league play

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee volleyball team turned a big third-set deficit into an emotional win as the Panthers swept UIC, 25-18, 25-18, 27-25, Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.
 
With the win, UWM improves to 9-5 overall and remains undefeated in conference play at 3-0.
 
"This was a total team win today," head coach Susie Johnson said. "The focus of tonight was to be committed to discipline. We definitely showed that in the first two sets. UIC responded nicely in the third and we had to adjust. I'm very proud of how they responded and the will to win that they showed today."
 
Milwaukee showed exceptional defense Saturday, with Myanna Ruiz leading the way with 19 digs in the three-set match. Teagan Taylor also had a strong showing, collecting 13 digs for the match.
 
UWM also had 13 blocks Saturday, including six in the third set alone. Bridget Wallenberger led the way with seven total blocks, while Jess Kalous added five and Jenn Dore four.
 
Offensively, Caitlin Schultz had 12 kills, while Wallenberger added 11 while hitting .476 and Kylie Wilks had another 10 while hitting .421.
 
Dore tallied 41 assists to up her average per set to 10.2.
 
Milwaukee efficiently took take care of the Flames in the first set, before a back-and-forth second set saw UWM pull away late for the 2-0 at the break.
 
The suspense came in third. UIC came out fired up out of the break and claimed big leads of 12-4 and 21-14. The Panthers never quit and slowly started to chip away. Down seven, Milwaukee used a 4-1 run, capped on two-straight kills by Wilks to make it 22-18. After a Flames point, UWM grabbed another three straight after a block by Dore and Wallenberger. Facing set point, Wallenberger took over with two points sandwiching a pair of blocks to suddenly give Milwaukee a 25-24 lead. UIC would force extras but the Panthers were riding high in front of the Klotsche Center crowd and closed things out kills by Ruiz and Schultz.
 
Milwaukee hit .252 for the match and held UIC to just .162.
 
With nine wins, Milwaukee has already matched its total from one year ago with at least 13 matches still left on the schedule this season.
 
The Panthers have a quick turnaround with a big Sunday matchup against in-state rival Green Bay, the only other remaining undefeated team in the Horizon League. First serve is schedule for 4:05 from the Klotsche Center and can also be seen live on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
