Panthers Suffer Rare Defeat As Phoenix Escape With A Win

Ruiz with 25 digs in narrow loss

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee volleyball team suffered a rare home defeat to red-hot Green Bay in a 3-2 thriller of a match Sunday afternoon at the Klotsche Center, 17-25, 25-18, 25-12, 24-26, 11-15.

UWM (9-6, 3-1 Horizon) suffered its first league loss and dropped its first home match to fall to 6-1 at the Klotsche, while Green Bay (12-4, 4-0) continued its best start in program history.

"We had a lot of opportunities to finish this match and we weren't able to capitalize," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "I thought Green Bay did a really nice job taking over when we weren't finishing and made some really nice plays at critical moments, so hats off to them. They took a couple of our hitters out of the game.

"There are still positives to take away, though. Defensively we were very strong. We had a lot of blocks and a lot of digs. At the end of the day, we have to figure out how we can finish consistently. It was a good match, but naturally I'm disappointed in the result because it was right there for the taking."

Myanna Ruiz led the Milwaukee defense with 25 digs one day after tallying 19 in a three-set win. Mykie Olsen and Teagan Taylor also were big, with 15 and 14 digs respectively, while Kylie Wilks added nine and Jenn Dore another eight.

Dore dished out another 48 assists Sunday, with four players reaching double figures in kills. Wilks led the way with 16, while Bridget Wallenberger (13), Jess Kalous (13) and Caitlin Schultz (11) also were key contributors.

Jessica Wolf led Green Bay with 15 kills while Lydia DeWeese had a double-double of 11 kills and 11 blocks.

After dropping a closely contested first set, Milwaukee responded right back in the second. The Panthers made a 4-0 run to grab the lead at 11-8 and would never look back to even things up.

UWM rode that momentum with a lopsided victory in the third. A block by Kalous and Dore made it 13-8 Milwaukee and the Phoenix never got any closer as the Panthers seized the momentum.

Milwaukee continued to ride the high of the loud crowd inside the Klotsche and jumped out to an 11-6 lead after a GB error. But, Green Bay slowly cut into the lead and eventually evened things up at 16-all. It was back-and-forth to the finish, with the Phoenix just able to squeak out two-straight points to win in extras.

In the deciding fifth, Milwaukee again responded well to claim an 8-5 lead on a kill from Kalous at the switch. But, GB got hot late and UWM couldn't cool them off in the early battle for first place.

For the match, Milwaukee hit just .167 but still held Green Bay to just .119 – it's second-lowest total of the season.

The Panthers now hit the road for four straight, heading to northeast Ohio next weekend to take on Cleveland State Friday before a Saturday matchup at Youngstown State.
