Defending League Champs Outlast Milwaukee In Five

Panthers take Cleveland State to the brink on the road

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Alexis Middlebrooks had 18 kills as Cleveland State got hot late to just hold off the Milwaukee volleyball team, 3-2, Friday evening from Woodling Gymnasium.

Milwaukee was leading the defending league champs with the match on the line in the fourth, but suffered a key injury and never quite recovered in the narrow loss, 25-20, 22-25, 16-25, 25-22, 15-5.

"These are learning experiences for our team," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We're a young team and, in the last two matches the more experienced team won. We're competing against the top teams in our conference, and I'm proud of that. Now we need to finish these opportunities and turn these close losses into wins."

Freshman Kylie Wilks had a huge night, tallying team and career highs in both digs and kills with 17 each. That marks the second double-double of her young career.

Mykie Olsen also had 17 digs despite missing the entire fifth set, while Teagan Taylor added another 11.

Three other Panthers reached double digits in kills, as Bridget Wallenberger had 15, Jess Kalous had 11 and Caitlin Schultz added another 10.

Jenn Dore once again did well from the setter position, racking up another 56 assists in this one.

After dropping the first set, UWM responded well with a big win in the second. In a set full of runs, Milwaukee led by as many as five late only to see CSU roar back at cut the lead to 23-22. But, Milwaukee kept the pressure on with a kill by Wilks and forced a Viking error to even things up.

It was all Milwaukee in the third, leading from nearly start to finish, while hitting .333 and holding Cleveland State to .000 to claim the lead.

In a closely contested fourth set, it was all tied up at 19-apiece before a short three-point spurt by CSU gave them a narrow edge. The two teams traded points from there and that run proved to be just enough to send this one to the deciding fifth set.

After Olsen's injury to start the fifth – leaving the Panthers with five freshmen on the court at one point in the set – Milwaukee couldn't quite regroup for just their second conference loss of the year.

"Kylie was big for us tonight," Johnson said. "She was really hot in the second and third. Our serving was strong, our block was really good and we were very aggressive in (sets) two and three. We just need to consistently show that type of performance going forward."

Milwaukee is right back at it Saturday, continuing on down the road to Youngstown State for a 3 pm Central contest at the Beeghly Center.
