Panthers Bounce Back With Big Road Win

Wilks posts second-straight double-double

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Four players reached double figures in kills as the Milwaukee volleyball team used a total team effort for a 25-18, 30-28, 18-25, 25-22 win over Youngstown State Saturday afternoon from the Beeghly Center.

The win is a big one for Milwaukee (10-7, 4-2 Horizon), bouncing back from a pair of five-set losses, including one less than 24 hours earlier.

"This was a great all around match," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Both teams were very strong today. Youngstown (7-13, 1-5 Horizon) made us earn everything today. We were very efficient and everybody contributed. It was a very good response after last night."

Bridget Wallenberger led UWM with 15 kills, while Jess Kalous, Caitlin Schultz and Kylie Wilks all added 11 each. Wilks also collected 12 digs on the day for her second-straight double-double.

Myanna Ruiz led all players with 15 digs, while Louise Kiekhofer added another 11 in her first start in conference play.

Jenn Dore was once again outstanding from the setter position with 52 assists in the four-set win.

Lori Vanbeek led all players with 22 kills.

Milwaukee was in control from start to finish in the first, firing on all cylinders and hitting an outstanding .500 for the set to claim the early lead.

Things were much closer in the second. After the Panthers claimed a 19-13 lead, YSU roared back to tie things up at 21-all. UWM fought off three set points and found the floor on three straight to claim the win in extras, capped on a big block by Sydney Book.

After the Penguins claimed the third to avoid the sweep, Milwaukee responded well to end any thought of a comeback. It was close all the way, and Youngstown actually led late at 21-20. But UWM scored five of the next six and closed things out on an emphatic kill by Schultz to seal the win.

Milwaukee hit .297 for the match, just ahead of Youngstown State at .291. The Panthers also had eight service aces Saturday, tying a season high.

UWM remains on the road next weekend, heading to Oakland on Friday before a Saturday afternoon match at Valparaiso.
