Gritty Panthers Come Up Just Short At Oakland

Milwaukee’s only league losses this year have all come in five sets

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Milwaukee volleyball team roared out to an opening set win but could not quite duplicate that effort going forward in a five-set loss to Oakland Friday evening from the O'rena.

Despite starting five freshmen and only playing two upperclassmen all match, the Panthers continued to fight before coming up just short, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 15-6.

"We had a lot of fight tonight, and that is definitely something to be proud of," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We're a young team, that's not hard to see. We're struggling with giving up streaks of points right now and that's something that we need to learn to get better at quickly. But this team does continue to show fight and we're pushing these talented teams to five sets. We just need to get over that hump."

The loss drops Milwaukee to 10-8 on the season and 4-3 in the Horizon League, with all three conference losses coming to the top three teams in the league and all three in five sets.

Oakland improves to 14-8 overall and 6-2 in league play.

Kylie Wilks was one of three Panthers with double figures in kills on the night with 15, followed closely by Caitlin Schultz (13) and Bridget Wallenberger (11).

Myanna Ruiz led the defense with 17 digs, with Teagan Taylor continuing her strong play with 14 and Wilks adding another double-double with 10 digs.

Jenn Dore dished out another 48 assists in the loss.

Sammy Condon led all players with 17 kills, while Krysteena Davis was key with 10 of Oakland's 17 blocks on the match.

Milwaukee came out flying high in the opening set, hitting an outstanding .520 to take set one in convincing fashion.

After OU used big runs to claim sets two and three, Milwaukee responded well with a gritty performance on the ropes in the fourth. Down 14-9, clawed back to within one three times, but it looked like time would run out as the Golden Grizzlies held a 23-21 lead late. Milwaukee picked a good time to get red hot, as the Panthers rattled off four straight – highlighted by a pair of kills by Wilks and a block by Wallenberger and Sydney Book – to level the match at 2-2 and send it to the deciding fifth set.

The final stanza was not to be for the visitors, however, as Oakland got the crowd into it early and carried that momentum straight to the win.

Milwaukee now heads to Valparaiso for a 5 pm contest against the Crusaders on Saturday.
