Defense Leads Panthers Past Crusaders

Ruiz, Kiekhofer each with 21 digs in four-set win

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Myanna Ruiz and Louise Kiekhofer each recorded 21 digs to lead an impressive defensive effort by the Milwaukee volleyball team in a 3-1 win over Valparaiso Saturday afternoon from the ARC.

Five players in all reached double figures in digs and Bridget Wallenberger added eight blocks as the defense carried the team to a 25-22, 25-20, 16-25, 25-22 win.

"This was a good response for us today," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Yesterday was a tough match, but we were loose today and that showed. I was very impressed with Myanna and the defense as a whole with their commitment to the game plan. It wasn't the necessarily the prettiest of matches, but we found a way to win and that's what's important."

Ruiz and Kiekhofer were huge for Milwaukee (11-8, 5-3 Horizon) with 21 digs each. Kylie Wilks added a career-high 18, while Jenn Dore also had 18 – one shy of her career best. Teagan Taylor also was big for the Panthers with 11 digs. As a team, Milwaukee collected a season-high 94 digs – the most for UWM in a four-set match since Oct. 12, 2012.

Offensively, Wilks recorded her fourth-straight double-double and fifth of her young career with 15 kills to go with those 18 digs. Wallenberger led the team with 20 kills, while Jess Kalous added another 10.

Jenn Dore upped her season average with another 48 assists in the four-set win.

Milwaukee came out strong in the opening set and quickly erased the memory of Friday's loss with a big 17-10 lead early. Valpo rallied late, but the Panthers proved to be too much to claim the early lead.

After trailing early in the second, UWM turned a 7-4 deficit into a 24-17 lead. Wallenberger then put things away with a big kill as Milwaukee hit .250 in the frame for the 2-0 lead at the break.

Valpo was able get back into the match with a win in the third, but the Panthers ended any doubt of a comeback with a solid performance in the fourth.

Milwaukee held Valparaiso to just .109 hitting on the day despite hitting an uncharacteristic .098 themselves. UWM also had 11 blocks and a pair of service aces in the win.

The Panthers now return home next weekend for a brief two-match homestand, starting Friday at 7 pm when Youngstown State comes to the Klotsche Center.
