Efficient Panthers Sweep Penguins

Team now 6-3 in league play

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee volleyball team was firing on all cylinders in a quick, 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 sweep of Youngstown State Friday evening from the Klotsche Center.

UWM (12-8, 6-3 Horizon) hit an impressive .299 for the match while holding the Penguins (7-16, 1-8 Horizon) to just .105 overall.

"That was the most efficient match we've played all season, from start to finish," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Overall, we had a very balanced offense and a really good defense.

"We took care of business and that's what you need at this time of year. You have to continue to get better and I felt like that was one of the better matches we've played all season. I'm really excited about that, because that means there is growth, there's maturity in our young people that are on the court. They're getting better and better and that's all you can ask for."

Jenn Dore orchestrated the offense beautifully on Friday, dishing out 43 assists in the three-set sweep.

Three Panthers reached double figures in kills, led by Bridget Wallenberger with 13. Jess Kalous had 12 while hitting a team-high .429. Caitlin Schultz had 10 kills, while Kylie Wilks added another nine.

Defensively, UWM had 46 digs to Youngstown's 39, with Teagan Taylor leading the Panthers with 14. Myanna Ruiz was big with another 12 and Louise Kiekhofer chipped in with nine.

After starting the match 6-6 in the opening frame, Milwaukee grabbed control from there. UWM used a pair of 7-1 runs to quickly claim a big lead before closing things out with an emphatic block by Wallenberger and Dore.

Defense was the name of the game in the second as UWM held the Penguins to just .025 hitting. Milwaukee again used some big runs (6-0, 4-1 and 5-1) as the offense kept clicking for a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Panthers came out of halftime wasting no time, jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead. Youngstown State battled back and showed some fight, cutting the UWM lead to just 22-19 late. But, Milwaukee was up to the task with three straight, closing things out on a service ace by Wallenberger.

Milwaukee had seven aces for the match, tying their season high for a three setter.

UWM is right back at it on Saturday, squaring off against league-leading Cleveland State in a 6 pm contest from the Klotsche Center. Saturday is also Girl Scout day that includes a ticket deal and a post-match clinic for Girl Scouts.
