Vikings Again Outlast Milwaukee

Panther comeback effort falls just short

MILWAUKEE – Defending Horizon League Champion Cleveland State continued their near-perfect league season by escaping the Milwaukee volleyball team with a 3-2 win Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (12-9, 6-4 Horizon) gave the Vikings (18-4, 9-1 Horizon) everything they had to try and derail their eight-match win streak but it wasn't enough in the loss, 26-24, 32-34, 25-21, 17-25, 10-15.

"This is a frustrating loss," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Our team is playing with so much heart and energy and effort, and we're taking these talented teams to five sets and then coming up just short. We need to find a way to keep our composure, play our game and be aggressive at the finish."

Kylie Wilks was huge for Milwaukee in this one. The freshman had a match and career-high 23 kills and hit .367 for the match. She also collected her sixth double-double of the season with 12 digs, while also adding two service aces.

Jenn Dore also had a double-double for the Panthers. The freshman setter dished out 55 assists to go with her 13 digs.

Two more Panthers reached double-digit digs on the day to lead the strong defensive showing. Teagan Taylor led the way with 18 and Myanna Ruiz added another 16.

Offensively, Bridget Wallenberger had 14 kills with Jess Kalous close behind with nine.

Grace Kauth led the way for Cleveland State with 16 kills to go with her 14 digs.

CSU started the match strong with leads of 5-1 and 12-6, only to see Milwaukee claw their way back. The Panthers took their first lead at 19-18 on an ace by Ruiz, only to see the Vikings respond with a run of their own to take a 24-21 edge. Facing two set points, UWM didn't flinch and rattled off five straight of its own, taking set one on a CSU miscue for the early lead.

The Panthers nearly pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in program history in set two. Down 19-6, UWM refused to quit. Using runs of 4-0, 3-0, 6-0 and 3-0, Milwaukee wowed the crowd with the huge comeback to knot things up at 23-23. The set went well into extras with the fans on their feet throughout. But, the Vikings were able to do just enough in the end for the 34-32 marathon win.

Milwaukee once again played the comeback card in the third. Down 20-17, UWM went on a tear and only allowed one more point against them to emphatically take the 2-1 lead overall and seize the momentum.

The defending league champs weren't going down without a fight, however. After CSU took set four, the two teams were tied at 5-5 early in the fifth set. Cleveland State was able create just enough separation to sneak away with the win and extend their win streak to nine straight.

Milwaukee had 14 blocks overall Saturday, with eight coming from Wallenberger and six more from Kalous.

UWM returns to the road next weekend for a pair of short road trips. The team will head to UIC Friday evening before a Sunday afternoon match in Green Bay.
