Flames Rally Past Banged Up Panthers

Milwaukee comes up just short in road match

CHICAGO – Caitlin Schultz and Kylie Wilks each had 18 kills but it wasn't enough as the Milwaukee volleyball team came up just short to a red-hot UIC squad, 3-1, Friday night from Flames Athletic Center.

The Panthers won the opening set before suffering a rash of injuries and falling just short, 25-18, 21-25, 24-26,21-25.

"Credit to UIC. Their blocking was big tonight and they came through in big moments," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Having multiple starters out was very difficult for our young team. We dug a lot of balls and had good amount of kills, but it came down to execution at the right time and it just didn't go our way."

It was all youth for UWM on the attack Friday. Wilks, a freshman, and Schultz, a sophomore, led the way with 18 kills apiece. Two more freshman also were big in this one, with Bridget Wallenberger tallying 10 kills and Louise Kiekhofer adding another nine.

Freshman Jenn Dore battled through an injury to still lead the way with 49 assists in the four set match.

Senior Myanna Ruiz led the defense with 18 digs, while sophomore Teagan Taylor had 15, Dore 14 and Kiekhofer another 13.

Kelsie Groot led the way with 19 kills and 11 digs for UIC, helping them to their second-straight big win at home.

Despite missing a pair of regular starters, UWM started strong. They used a 6-0 run early in the first to quickly grab a 7-4 lead – one they would never relinquish en route to a 25-18 opening-set win.

The second set was back and forth, The two teams battled and were tied at 20-20 late in the set. But, the Flames were able to do just enough down the stretch to even things up.

Things were tight the whole way in set number three. Down three late, Milwaukee rallied with three-straight to tie things up at 24-24. But, once again UIC was able to do just enough to eek out the win and take the 2-1 edge.

Just like sets two and three, the fourth was close the whole way. The Panthers led 21-20 late and looked to be heading into yet another five-setter, before an improbable run by the Flames closed things out.

UIC hit .271 for the match and had 14 total blocks.

Milwaukee returns to action Sunday with a 4 pm contest at Green Bay.
