Panthers Come Up Short At Green Bay

Defense strong in the loss

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Milwaukee volleyball team put forth a strong defensive effort but it wasn't enough in a 3-0 loss to Green Bay Sunday afternoon from the Kress Center.

The banged up Panthers did all they could on the defensive side of the ball, but just couldn't get things going on the attack in the loss, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23.

"This was a hard match, trying to get our rhythm back with all these injuries," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Defensively, Myanna and Kylie were really good. I thought Jenn set the ball well, but we just need to put the ball away sooner to get our offense going."

Myanna Ruiz and Kylie Wilks spearheaded the defensive effort with 17 digs apiece, tying a career high for Wilks. As a team, the Panthers had 50 digs in the three-set match.

Milwaukee also had eight blocks Sunday – six coming from Bridget Wallenberger, including two solo efforts. Jenn Dore and Caitlin Schultz each also had a pair of blocks. Dore also tallied 35 assists.

Wilks also led the Panther attack with 11 kills for her seventh double-double of her young career. Schultz also reached double-digits in kills Sunday with 10.

Megan Powers and Jessica Wolf led the Phoenix with 17 and 16 kills each.

Green Bay grabbed an early lead in the opening frame, but Milwaukee kept things close to the end. A 3-0 UWM run drew things to just 21-19 late after a bill kill by Wilks. But, GB was able to just enough to outlast the Panthers in the opener.

Milwaukee couldn't quite get on track in set two, but responded well out of the gates after the break. UWM jumped out to a 5-3 lead and was up 18-15 at the midway point after a smash by Schultz. Green Bay was able to reestablish the momentum, however, and finished the match with a 5-0 run for the win.

Green Bay improves to 17-7 overall and 9-3 in league play, while the Panthers drop to 12-11 overall and 6-6 in the Horizon League.

UWM makes its final road trip of the regular season next weekend, heading to Wright State Friday evening before a Saturday afternoon contest at Northern Kentucky.
