Panthers Bounce Back With Key Road Win

Kiekhofer notches first career double-double

DAYTON, Ohio – The Milwaukee volleyball team got back to its winning ways with a win over Wright State Friday night from the McLin Gymnasium, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16.

The Panthers (13-11, 7-6 Horizon) got going early, and - save for an early let up in set two – never looked back to grab the key road win.

"This was a really nice team win for us tonight," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "It's great to have Mykie back, Louise and Bridget did a great job tonight, Sydney came in and really helped us a ton – it was just a total team effort.

"Defensively we were very strong again and the team played with a lot of urgency tonight. They were very demonstrative and played very much together and I'm really proud of them for that. We've dealt with a lot of adversity lately and to be able to fight through against a tough Wright State team tonight, I was very impressed."

Milwaukee once again had a strong defensive effort with four players reaching double figures. Myanna Ruiz led the way with 19 digs, followed closely by Louise Kiekhofer with 18, Mykie Olsen with 15 and Kylie Wilks with 10.

Bridget Wallenberger led the Panther's at the net with 17 kills while hitting .390 for the match. Kiekhofer had another 14 - hitting .324 - for her first career double-double, while Wilks collected her eighth double-double with 12 kills. Sydney Book also played a big role with nine kills and a .412 hitting percentage Friday.

Jenn Dore had 49 assists in the four-set match, moving her past 1,000 on the season. She now becomes just the third Panther to reach that milestone as a freshman.

Katie Klusman led the way for Wright State (9-17, 4-9 Horizon) with 23 kills.

UWM got hot midway through the first and jumped out to a quick lead. Already leading 15-13, the Panthers went on a 10-2 tear to emphatically put things away and grab the early edge.

Wright State responded with a big lead early in the second only to see Milwaukee roar back late. Down 12-3 and 22-16, the Panthers clawed all the way back to down just two at 24-22. But, WSU was able to find one more point to even things up.

It was a steady back-and-forth battle in the third, with UWM coming out on top. Milwaukee had four of its 10 blocks in the set, helping them claim the important 2-1 lead.

With momentum on their side, the Panthers seized their opportunity with a decisive showing in the fourth. Up 15-13 at the midway point, UWM rattled off nine of the next 10 points before winning big, 25-16.

Milwaukee is right back at it Saturday with its final road contest of the season, taking on Northern Kentucky at 3 pm Central.
