Milwaukee Opens League Play With Five-Set Thriller

Wallenberger leads the way with 24 kills

MILWAUKKEE – Bridget Wallenberger had a career-high 24 kills to lead all players as the Milwaukee volleyball team claimed a thrilling five-set win over Northern Kentucky Friday night in the Horizon League opener from inside the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (7-5, 1-0 Horizon) were dominant in the fifth set, hammering home 11 kills in the final stanza to seal the win, 18-25, 25-18, 25-22, 17-25, 15-10.

"This is a very good win for our team," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We played great all around defense tonight and really played well in the fifth set.

"Bridget was big for us tonight. She played with a lot of energy and she was very important for us – especially down the stretch."

Wallenberger punched home a career-high 24 kills – including six in the final frame – to go with her five blocks and seven digs. Caitlin Schultz was a big part of the offense Friday with 16 kills, as was Kylie Wilks with 10 kills.

Jenn Dore dished out a career-high 58 assists to go with her three blocks.

Defensively, Myanna Ruiz led the team with 25 digs, with Wilks (13), Teagan Taylor (12) and Mykie Olsen (9) all also playing key roles.

Jess Kalous also stuffed the stat sheet with eight kills and a match-high seven blocks.

Haley Libs led the Norse (6-6, 0-1 Horizon) with 20 kills and 11 digs.

After trading the first two sets in a highly contested contest, it all came down to the fifth and final set. As mentioned, Wallenberger was huge in the final frame with six kills, as Milwaukee tallied 11 kills as a team and hit .296 for the set. With NKU shifting its defense toward the hot hand, Dore keyed up Schultz for the final two points as the sophomore went cross court to send the Panthers home a winner.

As a team, Milwaukee had 12 blocks on the match and 71 total digs.

UWM has now won its first Horizon League match each of the 10 years coach Johnson has been at the helm.

The Panthers have now won all four five-set matches they have played this season.

Milwaukee is right back at it Saturday, taking on a Wright State squad that also won its league opener at 4 pm at the Klotsche Center. All UWM faculty and staff can attend tomorrow's big match for just $1.
