Panthers Take On Top Opponents At Minnesota

Masdevall Masip advances to semifinal

MINNEAPOLIS – Freshman Berta Masdevall Masip advanced to the semifinals of her flight to headline a solid day of performances for the Milwaukee tennis team Friday at the Gopher Invitational at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of Minnesota.

The Panthers battled both top talent from across the country as well as the elements, as action was moved indoors midday after rainy conditions moved into the area.

Masdevall Masip headlined the first day of action for Milwaukee at the national-level tournament. The newcomer advanced in her opener against Renu Sharma of Eastern Michigan before a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-8 comeback win over Kylie Boyer of Omaha. The Panther freshman will now take on Taylor Tamblyn of Iowa Saturday in the semifinals.

Hayley Marshall nearly advanced in her match Friday, coming up just short in a marathon of a contest. The senior finished just shy on the day to Barbora Kollarova of South Dakota, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Nicole Clarke was nearly a winner in her collegiate debut. The newcomer from Scotland fell just short, 5-7, 6-3, 10-5 in her day of action as a Panther.

In doubles play, Clarke teamed up with Labina Petrovska to post a perfect 2-0 mark on the opening day. The duo took down challengers from North Dakota (6-4) before a sweep of Omaha's top pairing.

Alysa Straub and Eszter Zador won their first match of the day over a duo from Iowa State, while Marshall and Masdevall Masip carried over their success from singles play in doubles action with a 6-0 sweep over South Dakota's doubles team of Yelazco/Crum.

Milwaukee returns to action Saturday with doubles play scheduled to start at 9 am, followed by singles play schedule for 11 am.
