Volleyball Win Streak Snapped In Close Loss

Panthers suffer first loss of season in nail-biting fashion

Fairfield, Conn.  – The Milwaukee volleyball team made strong rallies in each set but couldn't overcome a slow start in a 3-0 loss to Dartmouth Friday in the opener of the Hampton Inn Shelton Invitational hosted by Sacred Heart.

Dartmouth – playing its first match of the season – was able to jump out strong and hold off the Panther comeback for the very tight win, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23.

"We were right there in statistically, but we started off too slow in each set, and you can't give any team an opportunity in the first 15 points to not keep things close," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnsons said. "We had to play catch up in each set and that was difficult. We're looking at a little different lineup due to injury, so we're needing to work through that. We're looking to learn from this and respond tomorrow."

Jenn Dore once again paced the Milwaukee offense with 31 assists in the Panthers first loss of the season.

Freshman Kylie Wilks lead the team in kills in just her fourth collegiate match with 11 on the day.

Defending Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week Myanna Ruiz again proved her worth with 19 digs in the narrow defeat.

Milwaukee started the day on a strong note, jumping out to a 4-0 lead to start things off after back-to-back kills by Bridget Wallenberger. Dartmouth was able to regroup and responded with a run to go up 14-10. The Panthers kept things close, clawing back to within one at 16-15 after another kill by Wallenberger, but the Big Green proved too much in the opener for the narrow early advantage.

Dartmouth was able to carry that momentum into the start of the second to jump out to an 8-2 lead. Despite the big hole early, Milwaukee did not quit and charged back with a 7-0 run of its own to grab a 9-8 lead. DU responded with a run of its own, going up 21-15 late in the match. Back-to-back kills from Lexie Uselding help close the gap and UWM cut the lead to two three times but just ran out of time.

It was much of the same in the third. Dartmouth jumped out to a 14-5 lead to force an early Panther timeout. Down 19-10, Milwaukee charged back hard and furious. A kill from Maddie Williams gave UWM a 3-0 run followed quickly by a 4-0 and 5-0 run to suddenly tie things up at 22-all. But, the Big Green was able to just find a way to claim the final points in the nail-biting third set for Milwaukee's first loss of the season.

Milwaukee is right back at it Saturday, taking on host Sacred Heart at 11 am Central Time followed immediately by a 2:30 contest against George Mason to wrap up the tournament for the Panthers.
