Panthers Sweep Final Day Out East

Now 5-1 on the season

Fairfield, Conn. – The Milwaukee volleyball team swept the final two games of the Hampton Inn Shelton Invitational in impressive Saturday at the Pitt Center.

After their first loss of the season on Friday, UWM dropped the first two sets of the day Saturday only to win the next six-straight. The Panthers dropped host Sacred Heart 22-25, 33-35, 25-20, 25-13, 15-11 in a marathon of an opener, only to turn right around for a 25-19, 25-17, 25-16 win in the finale.

Milwaukee racked up an impressive 26 blocks in the two matches.

Following the conclusing of the tournament, Myanna Ruiz and Bridget Wallenberger were named to the all-tournament team.

"I'm really proud of this team," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We came back after yesterday with a great attitude and a lot of effort. This is a very coachable team and that's all you can ask for.

"It was a big guts match against Sacred Heart. We needed to be more disciplined and get back to our game, and that's exactly what we were able to do. We had a disciplined black and had good defense around that. We carried that into the second match and I'm very proud of how the team responded today."

Three Panthers reached double figures in kills in the opener, led by Taylor Mansfield with 15. Bridget Wallenberger and Louise Kiekhofer were right behind with 14 apiece.

Defensively at the net, Jess Kalous had a game-high seven blocks, while Mansfield had five and Kiekhofer and Maddie Williams each had three.

Jenn Dore again was strong leading the attack with 53 assists.

Myanna Ruiz had 26 digs, Kylie Wilks added 10 and Mykie Olsen nine.

After two extremely close losses in the first two sets, Milwaukee came out firing in the third with a 14-4 start. SHU tried to claw its way back, but the Panthers proved too much to take their first set of the match.

It was much of the same by UWM in the fourth, with the Panthers claiming early leads of 9-2 and 15-7 before putting the Pioneers away very efficiently to send it to a fifth set.

In the final frame, it was back-and-forth early, with SHU claiming a 7-6 lead near the midway point. From there, it was all Milwaukee. UWM rattled off three straight and five of the next six points to take an 11-8 edge. A kill by Mansfield and back-to-back SHU errors sealed the comeback by the young Panther team.

Playing just an hour after the opening marathon match, Milwaukee showed no signs of fatigue in quickly dispatching of George Mason in their tournament finale with the sweep.

As a team, the Panthers hit .338 in the final match of the weekend and held GMU to just .135. Milwaukee had another strong showing defensively, as well, with 11 more blocks.

Individually, Kalous again led the way with eight blocks, while Kiekhofer added six more.

Wallenberger had 11 kills to lead the attack, with Dore dishing out 32 more assists. Olsen forged the way for UWM in digs with 10.

The first set was a close affair until late. The two teams were tied at 17-17, until Milwaukee went on a tear. The Panthers claimed nine of the finale 11 points in the opening frame to take the early lead.

It was the same story in set number two. George Mason held a 12-10 lead early, only to see UWM go on a 5-0 run to go up 15-12. After back-to-back points by the Patriots, Milwaukee never let them any closer with 10 of the final 13 points going their way for the decisive 2-0 lead.

UWM nearly led from start to finish in the third and final set. A pair of aces by Teagan Taylor and a kill by Dore sparked an early edge for the Panthers. Three-straight kills by Wallenberger made it 16-9 Milwaukee and UWM would close it out by forcing a GMU error for the sweep.
