Panthers Come Up Just Short At Marquette

Ruiz named to all-tournament team

MILWAUKEE – Bridget Wallenberger led all players with 11 kills but it wasn't enough as the Milwaukee volleyball team came up just short in a narrow 3-0 win by Marquette Saturday afternoon in the final match of the Marquette Invitational at the Al McGuire Center.

Milwaukee (6-5) kept things close all day long but just couldn't get over the final hump, falling 21-25, 19-25, 21-25 to a Marquette squad (9-2) that was receiving votes in this week's national poll.

"I'm proud of what this team did today," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "No one ever likes to lose, but we came out after a tough match yesterday and we were better today. They competed and were very composed all match long, and that's definitely something we'll take going forward into conference play."

Wallenberger's 11 kills marks the fourth time in the last eight matches the freshman has reached double figures in that category.

Myanna Ruiz led the team with 18 digs and was named to the all-tournament team following the match – the fourth time she has been named to an all-tournament team this season.

Jenn Dore once again did well in generaling Milwaukee's attack with 35 assists in the three-set match. Dore also had 11 digs on Saturday.

Taylor Louis led the way for Marquette with 10 kills.

It was back-and-forth early in the first, with each team playing strong. Louise Kiekhofer's first kill of the day gave Milwaukee a 10-9 edge early and an ace by Ruiz tied things up at 12-12. After a short spurt gave MU a 17-13 edge and forced a Panther timeout, Milwaukee responded right back with a 4-0 run of its own capped by a kill from Wallenberger. UWM closed the gap to 22-21 late, but Marquette was able to do just enough to squeak out with the opening set.

Milwaukee responded well in the second, coming out and claiming a 4-1 lead early after an ace by Mykie Olsen and a blast by Kylie Wilks. Kills from Kalous and Wallenberger sandwiching an ace by Ruiz and UWM had a 13-12 lead midway through. It was close all the way to the end. A kill by Kalous closed the MU lead to 19-18, but the Golden Eagles were able to make a push to the finish line to just edge UWM.

Marquette carried that momentum into the third, establishing a strong lead midway through. Down 20-13, Milwaukee pushed back. Back-to-back kill from Kalous followed by a kill from Maddie Williams and Wilks and suddenly it was 22-19 Marquette. UWM closed it all the way to 23-21 after another kill by Wallenberger, but MU was able to find the final two points take the win.

The loss is the first true road loss of the season for Milwaukee, having previously beaten Western Michigan and Sacred Heart in their home tournaments.

After a month on the road, the Panthers return to the Klotsche Center next weekend for a pair of home matches to kick off Horizon League play. Milwaukee will host Northern Kentucky Friday night at 7 pm before a Saturday afternoon contest against Wright State.
