Panthers Come Up Just Short To Highly Touted Missouri State

Team plays Marquette Saturday on Time Warner Cable

MILWAUKEE – Lily Johnson had 15 kills to lead Missouri State to a 3-0 win over the Milwaukee volleyball team Friday afternoon in the first match of the Marquette Invitational at the Al McGuire Center.

The Panthers (6-4) improved all match long, forcing extras in the third but just couldn't quite get over the hump in the loss, 25-15, 25-20, 26-24.

Missouri State – which sits just two spots outside the top-25 in the national rankings – improved to 9-3 on the year with their seventh-straight win.

"Missouri State is a very good team. But I do think there are a lot of things we did well in this match that we can hang our hats on," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "It doesn't necessarily show on the stat sheet, but our defense was great today. We got better as the match went on and the team responded well. These are things we definitely can take with us when we start conference play next week."

The defense was strong for Milwaukee on Friday, with three players reaching double figures in digs. Freshman Kylie Wilks led the way with 12, while Myanna Ruiz and Mykie Olsen each had 11.

Jenn Dore paced the Panther offense with 28 assists, while Jess Kalous and Louise Kiekhofer each had eight kills to lead UWM

Milwaukee never quite got on track in the opening frame. Missouri State hit an impressive .421 for the set for the early lead.

The second was a different story. Milwaukee responded well, claiming an early 4-1 lead. With the set tied at 10-10, MSU was able to go on a run that saw them claim a 21-12 lead. The Panthers did not quit though, responding with a big run of their own. Bridget Wallenberger started the rally with a big kill, followed by an ace from Kylie Wilks. Wallenberger added a solo block followed by kills from Louise Kiekhofer and Jess Kalous and just like that it was 22-18. UWM kept it close but the Bears were able to do just enough to sneak away with the 2-0 lead.

UWM nearly got right back in it with a strong showing in the third. It was back-and-forth early as an ace from Teagan Taylor and a block from Wallenberger made it 11-all. After a 5-0 MSU run, the Panthers responded with a big run of their own. A kill by Wilks drew it to 17-18, forcing a Bears timeout. UWM kept it rolling, recording back-to-back blocks followed by a thunderous kill by Kalous to make it an 8-2 run and claim a 20-18 lead. But, Missouri State was able to rally and do just enough to once again squeak away with the win.

Milwaukee is right back at it Saturday for a 1 pm contest that will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
