Milwaukee Bounces Back With Gutsy Win On The Road

Young team now 6-3 on the season

Kalamazoo, Mich. – Four Panthers reached double figure kills as the Milwaukee volleyball team bounced back for a big 3-2 win over host Western Michigan Saturday in the final match of the Holiday Inn West Invitational at University Arena.

Western Michigan (3-7) kept things interesting in their home tournament forcing the match into a fifth set, but Milwaukee (6-3) was up to the task for the win, 25-20, 16-25, 25-20, 19-25, 17-15.

"I'm very proud of how well the team responded today," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We were playing to win, and that was something that we talked a lot about after yesterday. It was definitely a change. Our goal today was to be more aggressive and get kills we very successful in that area."

Freshman Bridget Wallenberger led UWM on the day with 13 kills, while Caitlin Schultz (12), Jess Kalous (11) and Maddie Williams (10) all also reach double digits on the day.

Jenn Dore again was strong in leading the offense with 42 more assists.

Myanna Ruiz – who was named to the all-tournament team following the match – added another 18 digs to lead all Panthers. This marks the third-straight weekend Ruiz has been named to an all-tournament team to start the season.

Milwaukee was clearly focused right out of the gates, pouncing all over WMU in the opening set. A kill by Kylie Wilks gave UWM a 12-7 lead before aces by Wallenberger and Dore made it 19-11. The Broncos would try to come back, but the Panthers shut the door on a kill by Schultz to take the opener.

After a hiccup in the second saw Western Michigan tie things up, UWM was right back at their winning ways in the third. Despite falling down 10-6 early, Johnson's squad regrouped and tied things up at 14-14 on a kill by Kalous. Milwaukee then finished the set on a 9-2 run, emphatically reclaiming the lead on back-to-back kills by Schultz and Kalous.

But, Western Michigan refused to quit, forcing a fifth set. In the deciding stanza, the Panthers were up to the task. After again trailing early, 6-3, UWM scored five of the next six points to grab an 8-7 lead at the switch. With things knotted at 15-all, Milwaukee brought home the win with two more big kills, this time from Wilks and Schultz.

UWM hit .296 in the final set help ensure the victory.

After two weeks on the road, the Panthers return to Milwaukee next weekend for a tournament hosted by cross-town rival Marquette. Action starts Friday with a 4 pm contest against Missouri State before a Saturday matchup against the host Golden Eagles on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel scheduled for 1 pm.
