Milwaukee Completes Tournament Sweep

UWM wins Panther Invitational after sweep of Western Illinois

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee volleyball completed the sweep of its home Pepsi Panther Invitational with a 3-0 sweep in Saturday's final match against Western Illinois from the Klotsche Center.

UMW held WIU to just .018 hitting on the day – including negative percentages in the final two frames – and was once again dominant at the net in the 25-20, 25-14, 25-12 victory.

Following the match, senior Myanna Ruiz and freshman Jenn Dore were named to the all-tournament team, with sophomore Caitlin Schultz collecting the tournament MVP honors.

"It feels really good to put a lot of new people together and have them accomplish something so quickly," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "It's really exciting."

"We have really good, competitive players and we competed throughout the whole tournament for every point and every play – there's just so much effort. And the other thing is that they're great teammates. They get along so well, so there's great team chemistry already."

That chemistry once again was evident all match long as the Panthers got better as things went along, increasing their margin of victory in each of their three sets.

Individually, Schultz was again dominant with nine kills to raise her total tally to 41 for the weekend in just 11 sets. Newcomer Sydney Book led the way with 10 kills on the day, while five total Panthers had at least five kills in the sweep.

Dore orchestrated the offense incredibly well, registering 30 assists, giving her an impressive 118 in her first three collegiate matches.

Defensively, Ruiz led the way with 16 digs on the day, while Kylie Wilks collected 12 and Dore added 11.

The first set would prove to be the toughest of the day for the Panthers. The two teams battled back and forth, with neither gaining much of a foothold until late. Tied at 19-all, Milwaukee went on a 3-0 spurt, capped by a kill by Book. After WIU closed the gap to 22-20, UWM seized control with a Leatherneck error and two more kills from Book to claim the early lead.

From there, it was all Milwaukee.

After dropping the first two points in set number two, the Panthers rattled off eight in a row and eventually led 13-4 after an ace by Bridget Wallenberger. The lead would continue to swell and a 5-0 run late made it 23-10 following a block by Wallenberger and Book. UWM closed this one out on a perfectly placed kill by Wilks to head into the break with a commanding edge.

Set three saw two huge runs by Milwaukee to close this one out quickly. Tied at four, UWM went on an 8-1 run to suddenly make it 12-5. Following a brief WIU rebuttal and a timeout by Johnson, the Panthers jumped right back in the driver's seat to finish the match on an 11-2 run, closed out on another kill by Wilks.

Milwaukee will now hit the road for the first time this season, heading to Fairfield, Conn. next weekend for the Hampton Inn Shelton Invitational. The Panthers open Friday at 4:30 pm Central Time against Dartmouth before Saturday contests against host Sacred Heart and George Mason.
