Undefeated Flames Sneak Past Panthers

UWM takes on Valparaiso tomorrow at 10 am

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee tennis team once again nearly notched an impressive comeback only to finish just short with a narrow 4-3 loss to league-leading UIC Saturday at River Glen Elite.

The Panthers (8-8, 2-2 Horizon), which lost to the Flames (10-5, 4-0 Horizon) 6-1 just one year ago, won three singles points decisively but couldn't quite get over the hump in the tight match.

After falling down early in dropping the doubles point, Dana Shannon tied things up for UWM. The senior, playing in her final home series of her Panther career, quickly took down UIC's freshman phenom Rachel Le Comber, 7-5, 6-1. This is one of the biggest wins of the season for Shannon, as Le Comber came into the match with an impressive 11-3 record this spring.

The Flames countered with the next two points, putting the match in the balance with a 3-1 lead.

But Milwaukee refused to quit.

Junior Alysa Straub brought home a straight-sets win to close the gap. The Burr Ridge, Ill. native battled through the opening set, 7-6 (4), before a 7-5 win in the second for her 16th win of the year.

UIC was able to clinch the match with a close win at the No. 2 spot. Hayley Marshall took an early lead but couldn't quite hold on, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Aerielle Pendleton also won for the Black and Gold. The junior claimed a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win for her 15th win of the season.

It's a quick turnaround for the Panthers, as they will play host to Valparaiso Sunday at 10 a.m. in the final home match of the season.
