Panthers Extend Shutout Streak Against Norse

Teams wrap up series at Miller Park tomorrow

MILWAUKEE - Elijah Goodman struck out 11 batters over eight scoreless innings and the Milwaukee baseball team held Northern Kentucky University without a run for the second game in a row in claiming an 8-0 victory Saturday at Henry Aaron Field.

The Panthers (20-19, 9-7 Horizon League) used the same formula against the Norse (15-29, 4-17 Horizon League) that they did in Friday's win, scoring early and allowing a strong pitching performance to lead them to a victory.

"It was kind of a carbon copy of yesterday's game in a lot of ways," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "We put some pressure on them early, got that lead and by the third or fourth inning, Goody's stuff was pretty good and it was all him the rest of the way."

Goodman (2-0) pitched very well, allowing just four hits on the day in his 8.0 scoreless innings. He became just the sixth freshman to record 10-or-more strikeouts, with his total of 11 finishing just one shy of the school mark for a newcomer. Only one Norse baserunner made it as far as third base on the day, and Goodman posted back-to-back strikeouts to strand that threat in the third.

"It's hard to shut anybody out whether you are a fifth-year senior or a freshman," Doffek said. "That's two good starts in a row for him. It seemed pretty easy once he got his breaking ball and slider going and it's really encouraging. I thought he did a great job of keeping them off balance."

Daulton Varsho and Aaron Buban each went 2-for-3 to lead the offense. Varsho scored twice and missed a grand slam in the seventh inning by a foot, settling for a three-RBI triple that hit high off the fence in right center and cleared the bases. Buban had a pair of doubles and drove in two. Dan Barwick added a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

The Panthers jumped on the scoreboard right away in the second inning. Varsho led off with a double and came home on a fielder's choice. Buban added a sac fly and it was 2-0 in Milwaukee's favor after two innings.

UWM added a run in the fourth on Buban's double and put the game away with that big seventh inning that totaled five runs.

Goodman struck out four batters in a row at one point and faced the minimum over the final eight batters that he faced. Zach Brenner pitched the ninth, helping the Panthers close out the consecutive shutouts, something that has only been done five other times in program history (most recently UWM blanked Oakland, 5-0, in two games in a row last May).

Up next is one of the days on the schedule that gets circled early, as the Panthers make their annual trek to Miller Park to close out the series. The Panthers and Norse will play following the Brewers/Marlins game tomorrow. The MLB game gets underway at 1:10 p.m. and the college game will start approximately 30 minutes after the field is ready to play.
