Norse Prevent Milwaukee Weekend Sweep

Panther offense can’t get on track

MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee baseball team rallied to get the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but could get no closer, falling to Northern Kentucky University by a score of 3-0 Sunday evening at Miller Park.

The Panthers (20-20, 9-8 Horizon League) did not have many opportunities against the Norse (16-29, 5-17 Horizon League), who got an impressive pitching effort from starter Trey Ganns.

"We just got beat," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "Their pitcher really threw a good game and we didn't do a very good job of adjusting and he exposed it. You have to give him credit, he did a really nice job."

Ganns set an NKU NCAA Division I record with 14 strikeouts, working into the eighth inning before being relieved. He gave up four hits and walked three, but held the Panthers in check for the majority of his outing.

UWM tried to make a go of it in the ninth, but the rally came up short after Cole Heili and Nick Unes singled. Aric Harris worked around the threat to record his second save of the season and give the weekend series between the two schools shutouts in each contest.

"It was a good game, we just couldn't get anything going with the bats," Doffek said. "It's a first-class building and experience. I know every opponent we bring in here is as excited as we are to come in here. Obviously, our guys have a lot of Wisconsin ties and grew up watching the Brewers. It's just a great place."

The Norse got on the scoreboard with the help of three hits in the first inning, tallying their first run of the series on a hit by none other than Ganns, plating their first run overall in 25 innings of play.

Ganns was close to untouchable the first time through the UWM order, facing the minimum while striking out six, including five in a row at one point.

The Milwaukee offense had six hits on the day, with Unes leading the way at 2-for-4. Adam Reuss (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs in 7.0 innings. He walked one and struck out four. With the loss, the Panthers are now 16-10 overall in games played at Miller Park since 2002.

Up next, it's more home games, starting with a Tuesday matinee against Chicago State. First pitch against the Cougars is set for 3 p.m. at Henry Aaron Field.
