Marshall’s Heroics Give Panthers Big Win

UWM finishes season with 6-3 league record

Dayton, OhioHayley Marshall put together a comeback for the ages as the Milwaukee women's tennis team closed out the 2016 regular season with a huge 4-3 win over Wright State Sunday morning from Springboro High School.

Milwaukee (12-9, 6-3 Horizon), which came into the match tied with Wright State (18-8, 5-4 Horizon) in the league standings, finishes the regular season fourth in the league standings.

This marks the third time in the last five years Milwaukee has recorded at least six conference wins.

For the second-straight day, Milwaukee dropped the opening doubles point but rallied with outstanding showings in singles play.

Aerielle Pendleton continued her winning ways, making quick work of her opponent at the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 6-2, to even things up.

After a WSU point, UWM once again bounced right back with a win of its own to tie things back up. Alysa Straub claimed her 20th win of the year and improved to 8-1 in conference play with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Laurie Clark then moved into second place in school history for single-season wins with her 24th win of the year. The freshman took down Tori Turner, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot to give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead.

After Wright State tied things back up, it all came down to the No. 2 match. Dropping the first set and falling down early in the second, Hayley Marshall had an incredible comeback. The junior was down 2-5 in the second set and faced elimination, only to rally for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win to seal the team victory.

Milwaukee now knows they will be seeded fourth in next week's conference tournament, starting Friday at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
