Panthers Hand Vikings First League Loss

Milwaukee improves to 4-2 in conference play

CLEVELAND – The Milwaukee women's tennis team handed Cleveland State its first conference loss of the year with a thrilling 4-3 win Saturday afternoon from the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.

Hayley Marshall clinched the win for UWM (10-8, 4-2 Horizon) with a three-set victory at the No. 2 spot in front of a large group of fans, handing CSU (11-8, 5-1 Horizon) its first home loss of the season.

"I'm super proud of this team right now," Milwaukee head coach Jeff Aranda said. "This was a great tennis match and our girls really battled for this win."

The Panthers started the match win a big win in doubles play – the first time Cleveland State has dropped the doubles point in league action. Labina Petrovska and Marshall teamed up for a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot. Then, with the point on the line, Laurie Clark and Alysa Straub claimed the top spot 7-6 (7-4) for the early Panther lead.

Petrovska then made it 2-0 for Milwaukee with an efficient 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot.

After a pair of CSU wins, the Panthers went back ahead after a singles win from Clark. The freshman claimed her 23rd victory of the year with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Princess Gbadamosi at the No. 3 spot to make it 3-2 UWM with two points to go.

Aerielle Pendleton nearly brought it home but came up just short as Jana Schober put together a furious rally for the 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win at the No. 6 spot.

With the match all tied up, it all came down to Marshall. The junior from Stafforshire, U.K. dropped her first set before a thrilling comeback win, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

It's a quick turnaround for the Black & Gold, heading to Youngstown State Sunday for a 11 a.m. Central match.
