Panther Tennis Improves To .500 With Another Win

Team wins on coach Aranda’s birthday

Waterloo, Iowa – The Milwaukee women's tennis team won its second-straight match Friday, with a big 4-3 win over Northern Iowa from the Black Hawk Tennis Club.

"This was a great team effort today," Milwaukee head coach Jeff Aranda said. "We are .500 going into our Florida trip. I could not have asked for a better birthday present. This team is getting better and better and I am very proud. We're happy where we are with conference play just around the corner."

As it has done in so many matches this season, Milwaukee started things off with a win in doubles play. Hayley Marshall and Labina Petrovska won, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot, while Dana Shannon and Masha Lobanova also won 6-3 at the No. 3 spot to take the early 1-0 lead.

In singles play, Aerielle Pendleton put forth the strongest showing of the day. Competing at the No. 6 spot, the junior breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Savanna Hunt to quickly make it 2-0 Milwaukee.

At the fourth spot, it was Alysa Straub's turn. The Burr Ridge, Ill. native battled for a hard-fought 6-4 win in the opening set before a commanding 6-0 sweep in the second to secure the win.

Laurie Clark then sealed the win for the UWM Panthers. The freshman was strong from start to finish for a 6-1, 6-2 victory to clinch the team win.

Milwaukee will now take advantage of the break from classes with a spring break trip to Florida for a pair of matches next week, starting with Bucknell in Orlando on Wednesday.
