LUBBOCK, Tex. - Erikson Lanning allowed just one hit in six impressive innings to help Texas Tech University to a victory over the Milwaukee baseball team in the series finale Sunday at Rip Griffin Park.
Â
The Panthers (1-3) got in a first-inning hole against the 25
th-ranked Red Raiders (3-1) and could not recover, falling by a score of 12-0.
Â
"Today we went up against a kid who really pitched it," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "His command at the bottom of the strike zone was really good. We barreled a lot of balls, but just couldn't get anything through. And their infield play was outstanding as well."
Â
Brian Keller (0-1) suffered the loss, getting behind in a tough first inning where three runs scored despite the ball leaving the infield just once. He allowed five earned runs in 5.0 innings, walking one and striking out three.
Â
"I think once Keller got the jitters out, he threw the ball fairly well," Doffek said. "This weekend was productive in that, with so many new guys, we knew we were going to deal with a lot of nerves. I think you will see a much more relaxed team next weekend and in a better frame of mind."
Â
Lanning held UWM without a hit until the fifth inning, when
John Boidanis singled up the middle to lead off the frame.
Cole Heili was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs, but the Panthers could not take advantage. Heili also had the only other hit for Milwaukee.
Â
Jared Reklaitis made a strong appearance in relief, allowing just one hit in 2.0 scoreless innings.
Â
The Panthers will head to Florida next, taking on three different opponents at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Up first is a meeting against Bethune-Cookman Feb. 26, with first pitch at 1 p.m. CST.
