WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Jay Peters threw seven shutout innings and
Daulton Varsho hit a pair of home runs to power the Milwaukee baseball team to an 11-0 victory over Bethune-Cookman Friday afternoon in the Russmatt Baseball 2016 Central Florida Invitational.
The Panthers (2-3) led the Wildcats (2-3) just 1-0 at the midway point of the game, but scored twice in the fifth before a five-run uprising in the sixth put it away.
"The game was well played all around," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "Jay Peters was outstanding today. Varsh was special at the plate and we put together quality at bats up and down the lineup."Peters (1-0) finished with eight strikeouts in his first victory as a Panther, giving up just two singles and walking two. Following an early bunt, he retired 11 batters in a row before the Wildcats led off the top of the seventh with a single.
Varsho finished 3-for-4 with six runs batted in, belting a pair of three-run bombs in addition to adding a double and a stolen base.
He wasn't the only star of the day on offense.
Billy Quirke also homered, driving in three on three hits while also scoring three runs on the day.
Luke Meeteer added a pair of runs scored and two hits, pushing his career total to 199.
Eric Solberg finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and was on base in four of five plate appearances with a pair of walks.
Alex Fischer finished up the shutout for the Panthers, allowing just a single hit in his 2.0 innings of work.
The Panthers blew it open in the sixth. Quirke singled to center to drive in a pair and then Varsho followed with a blast that cleared the bases, chasing in three more to make it 8-0 at the time. His home runs were his third and fourth of the season already.
Milwaukee was scheduled to take on Ball State at 5 p.m. CST. All games have been delayed at the field today. That contest will start as soon as both teams are ready to play, approximately 6 p.m. CST.
