Panther Volleyball Suffers Heartbreaker In Tourney Finale

Price named to all-tournament team

Fargo, N.D. – Four players were in double figures in kills but the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team came up just short in a heartbreaking, 3-2 loss to North Dakota State in the final match of the Baymont Inn & Suites Classic Saturday night at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.

The Panthers (2-5) twice came back after being down and led in the decisive fifth set but couldn't quite hang on in the 25-20, 11-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13 loss to the host Bison (5-2).

"Losing in five is never easy," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We really fought and battled hard tonight. We continued to improve and had great performances all around. Kayla, Myanna, Mykie, Teagan, Maggie…it's frustrating to lose but we'll continue to work hard as we turn our attention to Iowa next week."

Kayla Price had a match-high 50 assists to guide the Panther attack. It was the third-straight solid outing for the senior setter, who was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts.

Maggie Dunbar again led the way on the attack with 17 kills. Sammi Herron (12), Taylor Mansfield (12) and Maddie Williams (11) all also were in double figures in kills.

Defensively, Myanna Ruiz turned in 27 digs to lead the way, while Teagan Taylor (11) and Mykie Olsen (nine) also did well.

Milwaukee was able to scrap along the entire first set but couldn't quite get its offense going in the narrow loss.

In set number two, the Panthers could do no wrong. UWM hit .438 as a team and a big kill by Dunbar quickly made it 10-2 Milwaukee. The Panthers had contributions from seemingly everyone on the court before a kill by Jess Kalous closed out the win to tie it up.

The third went back-and-forth the whole way as Kalous added another kill to tie things up a 22-22. But, NDSU was able to find a way late to reclaim the lead, 2-1.

Milwaukee again showed their ability to bounce back. Kills from Mansfield, Herron, Kalous and an ace by Ruiz highlighted an early run that gave UWM an early 13-4 lead. Tied at 21 late, this time in was the Panthers that found a way for the final few points. Price started things with a kill and Ruiz ended it to send it to a fifth set.

Even in the early going, the Bison were the first to force any separation in the fifth with a 12-10 lead. Herron registered a pair of kills but it wasn't enough as an NDSU block sent them home with the win.

Milwaukee now turns its attention to a tournament in Iowa next weekend, starting with a match against the host Hawkeyes Friday morning.
