Iowa Squeaks By Milwaukee In Tournament Opener

Dunbar leads all players with 13 kills

Iowa City, Iowa – Despite an all-around solid performance by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team, Iowa University was able to sneak by with a 3-0 victory Friday in the first match of the Comfort Suites Classic from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Milwaukee (2-6) came out strong and battled the Big Ten foe hard to the end before Iowa (4-3) was able to squeak out the win, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19.

"We did a lot of really great things in that match," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Our ball control was great, our setting was solid, and our defenders were very good. I felt like Kaisa, Maggie and Caitlin did a great job throughout the match. We just need to get all five hitters going in the right direction at the same time. But, we're progressing and we'll continue to work to put it all together."

Senior Maggie Dunbar led all players with 13 kills in the match, including seven in the opening set. Kaisa Mattson also was in double digits with 11, with freshmen Maddie Williams (eight) and Caitlin Schultz (seven) also contributing to the attack.

A pair of Panthers reached double figures in digs as Myanna Ruiz (20) and Maddie Schmitz (12) both led the way defensively.

Kayla Price – an all-league preseason honoree – once again distributed the offense well, dishing out 39 assists in the three-set match.

The Panthers came out unintimidated by their Big Ten opponent. Dunbar came out of the gates firing, hammering home kills on four of Milwaukee's first five points for the early lead. After a Hawkeye run that made it 20-15, UWM continued to fight back, bringing it all the way back to 23-22. Iowa was able to find two more points though to just get by for the narrow first-set win.

In set number two, it was Iowa that jumped out to the early lead. After going down five early, the Panthers rattled off point after point to take a 16-14 lead after a kill by Schultz. Two more kills by the freshman improved the lead to 18-15. Iowa again made a run and Milwaukee again remained calm in their response, nearly forcing extras before the Hawkeyes again were able to just sneak by.

UWM rode a very balanced attack in the third set and jumped out to a 14-10 lead. But, Iowa was able to make an impressive run, claiming 11 of the next 12 points en route to the win.

It's another quick turnaround for the Panthers, taking on 25th-ranked Texas A&M later tonight at 6 p.m.
