Panthers Come Up Just Short To No. 25 Aggies

Mattson with a career-high 16 kills

Iowa City, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team gave Texas A&M all they could handle before coming up just short, 3-1, in the second match of the day at the Comfort Suites Challenge Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Milwaukee (2-7) was right with one of the best teams in the country until a late push by the Aggies (5-2) for the win, 27-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-17.

UWM was statically right with the TAMU the whole way, finishing tied in assists (58) with nearly identical numbers in kills (64-62, TAMU), digs (68-67 UWM) and blocks (8-7, TAMU).

"We had a lot of positives in that match," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Texas A&M is ranked for a reason – they're a good team – but we made them work tonight. Maggie, Kaisa and Caitlin really stepped it up offensively again and Myanna was all over the place, defensively. They had to make adjustments to beat us and for us to compete like that against one of the best teams in the country is very encouraging."

Three Panthers reached double figures in kills, led by Maggie Dunbar with 18. Kaisa Mattson was right behind with a career-high 16, while freshman Caitlin Schultz chipped in 11 – also a career high.

Myanna Ruiz led the defense for Milwaukee, tying her season high with a match-high 30 digs on the night. Kayla Price and Maddie Schmitz both also added nine digs to aid the Panther defense.

Price once again was stellar in leading the attack, racking up 48 assists.

Milwaukee came out of the gates hot, jumping out to a 9-3 lead on the nationally ranked Aggies following a kill by Mattson. TAMU was able to make a few small runs before eventually tying things up at 24-24. The Panthers nearly claimed the early 1-0 lead but fell just short in extras.

Set two was all redemption for UWM. The Panthers again stormed out to an early lead, going up 10-3 after a kill by freshman Teagan Taylor. Three-straight blocks by UWM swelled the lead to 15-5 and Milwaukee would never look back. With kills from freshmen Celine Jones and Maddie Williams, the UWM attack was getting contributions from every player en route to tying the match up at 1-1.

The third set was back-and-forth the whole way, creating a great atmosphere for the match. A&M was the first to create some separation at 11-7, but Milwaukee was not intimidated and fought back to take a 16-15 lead after another back-to-back block party at the net. The Aggies were able to do just enough late to squeak out the win though, 25-20.

Milwaukee again refused to quit and kept things close in the fourth. A kill by Mattson tied things up at 10 apiece. From there, TAMU was able to find a rhythm and UWM just couldn't get back on track.

The Panthers will play their third match in just over 24 hours when they take on Iowa State Saturday in the final contest of the weekend tournament with a scheduled 4 p.m. start.
