Milwaukee Falls To Iowa State

Dunbar named to all-tourney team

Iowa City, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee couldn't quite slow down Big XII power Iowa State's attack in a 3-0 loss to the Cyclones Saturday in the final match of the Comfort Suites Challenge at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

ISU (6-3) – which beat No. 25 Texas A&M earlier in the tournament and was ranked as high as 21st in the nation earlier this season – was able to do just enough against the young Panther (2-8) squad in the win, 25-21, 25-21, 25-15.

"This was a tough match," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Iowa State is a good team. We just didn't get enough kills today. We had a lot of very good performances this weekend though, and I'm looking forward to next weekend to continue to grow and get better."

Senior Kayla Price led Milwaukee in the stat column with another 33 assists, raising her average to over 10 per set on the season.

Freshman Maddie Williams led the team with eight kills, while Kaisa Mattson, Maggie Dunbar and Caitlin Schultz all added seven apiece.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Dunbar was named to the all-tournament team.

The Cyclones came out of the gates strong and built an early 21-11 lead. The Panthers were able to make a furious comeback attempt. Three kills from Williams and an ace by Mattson capped a big run that drew the Panthers to within 23-20, but UWM could get no closer in the first.

ISU again claimed an early lead in the second set. After falling behind 8-2, UWM again came charging back. The Panthers chipped away at the Cyclones with a point at 17-16 following another ace by Mattson. Milwaukee kept it close the rest of the way but couldn't quite get over the hump in the narrow loss.

The Panther attack ran out of gas in the third. UWM stayed close early, but a big run by the perennial NCAA Tournament team closed things out.

UWM is back in action next weekend for its final non-conference tournament of the year with a trip to Evanston, Ill., taking on Lipscomb Saturday before a Sunday match against host Northwestern.
