Panther Comeback Falls Just Short Against Lipscomb

Herron posts team-high 12 kills

Evanston, Ill. – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team nearly completed the comeback but came up just short in the end, falling 3-1 to Lipscomb Saturday as part of the Wildcat Challenge in Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Lipscomb – which won 21 matches a year ago and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament – came out strong only to see Milwaukee fight back before coming up just short, 25-17, 17-25, 25-23, 25-18.

"I was pleased with the changes we made with the blocking scheme," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We had some good individual performances today, both offensively and defensively. We just need to be better at the end of the set."

Senior Sammi Herron led the way for Milwaukee on the offensive side of the ball, tallying a team-high 12 kills and hitting a season-high .423.

Defensively, Myanna Ruiz had 17 digs with Maddie Schmitz not far behind with nine.

Milwaukee also was very strong at the net on the defensive side, registering 10 total team blocks.

UWM couldn't slow down a hot start by the Bisons in the first set. Lipscomb hit .464 in the opening frame to take the early lead.

The Panthers showed their fight and battled back in the second. After being tied 10-10, Kayla Price and Kaisa Mattson each had three kills to start to pull away. A pair of aces by freshman Teagan Taylor and four total blocks put things away as UWM cruised to the win to even things up.

Set number three was back-and-forth the whole way, with 13 ties along the way. Freshman Caitlin Schultz had four kills in the set, but it was a big kill by Herron that put Milwaukee up 20-17 late. After a LU run, UWM tied things back up at 23-apiece after a kill by Mattson. The Bisons were able to squeak out the final two points though to retake the lead.

It was a similar story in the fourth set. The two teams battled back and forth and were tied at 17 late. But, Lipscomb was able to get in a groove late to walk away with the win.

Milwaukee will take on the hosts of the tournament Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against Northwestern.
