Wildcats Too Much For Milwaukee

Williams named to all-tournament team

Evanston, Ill. – Northwestern University hit .300 for the match in a 3-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The Wildcats (8-3) came out on fire in just their second home match of the season, feeding off the crowd's energy for the win, 25-14, 25-19, 25-21.

"This has been a very challenging non-conference schedule – probably the hardest we've ever taken on – but now it's behind us," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Although it may not always show in the win column, our players have been growing and our team has been developing and improving. Maddie Williams has developed into quite a player and she was named to the all-tournament team.

"This team continues to grow and we look forward to starting conference play this week."

The all-tournament Williams was one of two Panthers in double digits in kills with 10, while Maggie Dunbar led the way with 11.

Kayla Price paced the Panthers with 29 assists. Myanna Ruiz led the way defensively with a match-high 14 digs.

Milwaukee came out strong in set number one, claiming a 6-2 lead after an ace by Maddie Schmitz. The Wildcats were able to battle back and tied things up at 11-11. From there, NU could do no wrong to pull away for the set win.

Northwestern continued their hot streak, claiming a early lead in the second. Milwaukee came roaring back, though. After being down 12 at one point, UWM pulled all the way back within five in an impressive run, but NU was able to add just enough to escape the Milwaukee comeback.

The Panthers started set number three with a 7-0 after some stellar defense early. Northwestern was able to chip away at the Milwaukee lead and tied things up at 17-17. From there, NU proved to have just enough to secure the win.

It's on to conference play for the Panthers next week, with three road matches in three days to start league action. First, it's a rematch of last year's league tournament championship with a Thursday night contest at Oakland slatted for a 6 p.m. Central start.
