Volleyball Falls To Red Hot Towson

Team posts a season-high 10 blocks

Fargo, N.D. – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team had a season-high 10 blocks fell just short, 3-1, Saturday morning to the red hot Towson University at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse in the second of three matches as part of the Baymont Inn & Suites Classic.

Milwaukee (2-4) battled all day long against a Towson (6-1) team that has only dropped five sets all season and hasn't lost since the season-opener to Tennessee. UWM took one set early on before falling 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20.

"We're making some progress," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We were much better offensively today and I'm very proud of the team for that. We came into the day with goals to stay disciplined with our blocks and on the attack and I think that showed.

"Towson is a very good team and they don't give you much to work with. Although we lost the match, we're continuing to get better and I think that's going to continue from here on out."

Freshman Maddie Williams had a strong day on the court, leading the offense with 13 kills while adding a career-high six blocks. Kaisa Mattson added 10 kills to go with her four blocks on the day.

Kayla Price tallied a match-high 38 assists, while Myanna Ruiz added 15 digs on the defensive side.

As a team, the Panthers hit .230 for the match.

UWM started the day strong, jumping out to an 8-3 lead in set number one. The two teams went back-and-forth from there, eventually tying things up at 17-17. From there, the Tigers were able to go on a run to claim the early lead.

Milwaukee responded well in set two. After falling down early, the Panthers went on an 11-3 run, capped by a kill from freshman Celine Jones. A kill by sophomore Jess Kalous, a pair of Jones' kills and a block by both Kalous and Jones sparked another UWM run. Towson clawed back and tied things up at 22-22, but a Tiger error and a pair of kills by Williams gave Milwaukee the set to tie things up at 1-1.

The Tigers offense was clicking in the third as they hit .381 for the set to reclaim the lead.

In the fourth, UWM refused to quit. Back-to-back blocks by Mattson and Williams staked the Panthers to an early lead. From there, it was an even contest until a late run by the Tigers gave them the late lead. Milwaukee continued to fight, drawing to 24-20 after a kill by Williams but Towson was able to find the winner to end it.

It's another quick turnaround for Milwaukee as they will now take on North Dakota State Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the final match of the weekend tournament.
