Milwaukee Comes Up Just Short In Tournament Opener

Panthers have two matches Saturday

Fargo, N.D.  – Newcomer Taylor Mansfield reached double figures in kills for the third time in her young Panther career but it wasn't enough as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team came up just short in the Baymont Inn & Suites Classic opener Friday, falling 3-0 to Utah Valley from the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.

UWM (2-3) battled in all three closely contested sets but couldn't quite find the finishing touch, dropping the tight match to UVU (2-3) 25-23, 25-20, 25-21.

"These early season tournaments are always very difficult," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "I fully believe in how we schedule, but it's not always easy. Right now we have to learn how to react to the pressure of the game a little better. It's something we work on in practice and it's coming along, but we have to continue to get better to get over that hump.

"We'll continue to develop our players and our lineup and I'm confident we'll get where we want to be."

Mansfield tallied 10 kills to lead Milwaukee at the net. Senior Kayla Price added another 24 assists while both Myanna Ruiz (13) and Maggie Dunbar (10) were in double figures in digs.

The Panthers came out strong in the first set. After the Wolverines took the early 7-4 lead, UWM rattled off five in a row, capped by an ace from Price. From there, the two teams went back-and-forth until a kill from Sammi Herron and a UVU error knotted things up at 23 apiece. But, the Wolverines were able to come up with back-to-back points to sneak out of the first set with the win.

Milwaukee's attack couldn't quite get on track in the second. UVU held Milwaukee to hit negative in the set. Despite the offensive struggles, UWM still found itself close at the end. A thunderous kill by Dunbar brought the team back to within 23-20, but UVU was able to pull out the last two points for the win.

Milwaukee was able to regroup in the third. A kill by Ruiz made it 7-4 and a huge block by Herron and Maddie Williams made it 13-12. After a run by Utah Valley, UWM was able to fight back and brought it to within 22-20 after another kill by Ruiz. The Wolverines were able to come up with three of the next four to steal another win away from UWM.

It's a quick turnaround for UWM with two matches Saturday, taking Towson at 10 a.m. before a 7 p.m. contest against the host Bison.
