Penguin Defense Cools Off Milwaukee Attack

Panthers to play third-straight road match Saturday

Youngstown, Ohio – Youngstown State University had arguably its best showing of the season in a 3-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team Friday night at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins (6-10, 1-1 Horizon) recorded 12 blocks and held Milwaukee - which played its 11th-straight match away from home Friday - to its lowest hitting percentage of the season to win, 25-16, 32-30, 25-17.

"We didn't respond well today," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Youngstown played really well. They came at us really hard and blocked well and it was very hard for us. We were able to respond and fought hard but we just have to be there right from the start.

"This is a tough road trip but we can't make excuses. Everyone just needs to be a little bit better tomorrow."

Three Panthers
(3-11, 1-1 HL) reached double figures in digs on the night. Myanna Ruiz had a team-high 17, with Mykie Olsen and Maggie Dunbar also chipping in for 10 digs apiece.

Kayla Price dished out another 33 assists, while Kaisa Mattson led the way at the net with 11 kills and four blocks.

The Penguins came out of the gates flying high. YSU hit .333 in the first set and limited Milwaukee to hit negative for the early lead.

UWM showed their fight, battling back in the second. Down 16-11, the Panthers patiently chipped away before knotting things up at 23-23. YSU got to set point but Milwaukee again fought back, forcing extras. Another kill by Mattson tied the set at 30-30, but Youngstown was able to do just enough from there to take the 2-0 lead.

YSU jumped out to an early lead in the third. The Panthers again fought back, clawing back to within one at the midway point before the Penguins were able to pull away.

Milwaukee will play its third road, league match in as many days with a Saturday match at Cleveland State, starting at 3 p.m. Central.
