Clark Leads Panthers At Gopher Invite

Milwaukee claims seven wins on opening day

MINNEAPOLIS – Freshman Laurie Clark continued her hot start to her collegiate career with two more wins to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tennis team in the first day of action at the Gopher Invite Friday.

Competing against some of the top talent from around the Midwest, Milwaukee racked up another seven wins in just its second tournament of the year.

Clark led the way for the Panthers in singles play. Competing in the A flight, Clark cruised to an opening win, 6-1, 6-4, over S. Halverson of SIU-Edwardsville. Then, in the next round, she took down A. Bergman of Minnesota in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Also competing in the A flight, freshman Labina Petrovska battled back from an opening set loss for a well-deserved 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 win.

UWM was dominant in doubles play Friday. The pairing of Hayley Marshall and Petrovska notched two big wins over its opponents from Air Force and Iowa State.

Dana Shannon and Masha Lobanova also were impressive on the day. The senior-freshman duo dominated their first match, 6-0, before pounding out a 7-6 win against another pairing from Iowa State to go 2-0 on the day.

Milwaukee will continue the weekend-long tournament Saturday from Minneapolis.
