Tennis Racks Up 10 Wins In Season Opener

Pendleton leads the way with a pair of singles wins

Des Moines, Iowa – It was a great start to the season for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tennis team as the Panthers racked up 10 wins in the first day of action at the Roger Knapp Tennis Invite Friday hosted by Drake.

Newcomer Labina Petrovska got things going for Milwaukee, claiming her first win in the Black & Gold in the "B" flight with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hylan Miller from Omaha.

Senior Dana Shannon also was a winner in "B" flight singles. In a back-and-forth match, Shannon proved to be too much for Kylie Boyer of Omaha, 7-5, 0-6, 6-4.

The Panthers got a pair of wins in the "C" flight. Freshman Laurie Clark won her first collegiate match with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory, while junior Alysa Straub cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win in her first action of the season.

Aerielle Pendleton had to battle to earn an impressive two wins on the opening day. The junior earned a pair of three-set wins – including one over Samm Pederson from conference rival Green Bay – to advance the elite eight.

Freshman Masha Lobanova also was a winner in her collegiate debut with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 decision to advance.

In doubles action, Shannon and Lobanova teamed up for a 6-3 win in their opening match against a duo from Creighton before bowing out to the top seeded pairing from Northern Illinois.

Straub and Clark also were paired together and earned a 6-2 win, while Pendleton teamed up with Noel Peck from Green Bay for a 6-4 win and will play in the semifinals of their flight Saturday.

UWM continues the three-day tournament to start the season Saturday at Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
