Volleyball Runs Out Of Gas Against Huskies

Panthers comeback bid comes up just short

DeKalb, Ill. – Newcomer Taylor Mansfield had a team-high 11 kills for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team but it wasn't enough as the Panthers fell, 3-1, Monday night to a red-hot Northern Illinois at Victor E. Court.

UWM shook off some early jitters to fight back and make things interesting against the MAC West preseason favorites before running out of gas in the end, 25-18, 25-9, 22-25, 25-16.

The Huskies, fresh off a win over Big Ten power Iowa, improve to 3-1 with the win, while Milwaukee is now 2-2 on the young season.

Myanna Ruiz led the Panther defense with 21 digs, while Kayla Price dished out another 32 assists.

T'ara Austin and Mary Grace Kelly tied for a match-high 14 kills each to lead NIU. The Huskies also were strong at the net defensively, adding 12 blocks.

"Northern Illinois is a very good team that is going to win a lot of matches this season," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "The team really fought back in the third and did a nice job. Our serving was good and Myanna did a great job defensively. We're just still trying to find our way offensively a bit right now. We just have continue to work at it and we're looking forward to showing that this weekend."

NIU came out swinging in the first. The Huskies claimed the first five points of the match and jumped out to a 20-11 lead at one point. Milwaukee fought hard, coming all the way back to 23-17 before falling.

The Huskies were firing on all cylinders in set number two. Offensively, NIU hit a whopping .462, while the defense held UWM to hit negative in the second en route to the win.

Milwaukee showed their fight by taking set three. NIU actually scored the first three points before the Panthers went on a tear. UWM kept the defense guessing with kills from Maddie Williams, Maggie Dunbar and Kaisa Mattson before back-to-back aces by Mykie Olsen made it 13-10. The Huskies hung around but a kill by Williams finally put it away.

The Panthers and Huskies battled back and forth in the fourth set with NIU taking a 14-12 lead midway. Milwaukee couldn't keep the offense going though in falling to Northern Illinois.

UWM now heads to Fargo, N.D. for the Bison Tournament, starting Friday. Milwaukee will square off against Utah Valley Friday at 4 p.m. before taking on Towson and host North Dakota State Saturday.
