WILMETTE, Ill. - Junior
Callie O'Donnell scored one goal and assisted another to help lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a convincing 3-0 victory over Indiana State Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Panthers controlled play against the Sycamores for the majority of the match, breaking into the scoring column around the 32
nd minute before doubling the advantage on a penalty kick just before halftime. An insurance goal came in the 79
th minute to put it away.
Â
"We definitely saw an improvement between our two scrimmages," UWM head coach
Troy Fabiano said. "As a staff, we are happy with the result, but we still have some things to improve on before we open the season Friday."
Â
The exhibition match was played at a neutral site at Loyola Academy on a very hot day in Wilmette, Ill.
Â
Scoreless until the 32
nd minute, O'Donnell opened the scoring when she took a pass from freshman
Kelli Swenson, bounced off a defender and lofted a 20-yard shot to the left corner of the goal, just over the keeper's outstretched arms.
Â
It appeared to be headed to intermission with that 1-0 scoreline, but the Panthers doubled their advantage on a penalty kick by junior
Maria Stephans, who slid the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0. The scoring opportunity was created when sophomore
Maddie Tetzke was fouled in the box on a breakaway and the whistle was blown for the spot kick.
Â
The second half saw Milwaukee control possession, adding an insurance strike around the 80
th minute. O'Donnell played a through ball to freshman
Olivia Wright, who was able to finish from about 15 yards out for the final score of the day in the 3-0 victory.
Â
Juniors
Paige Lincicum (45 minutes in second half; 2 saves) and
Mallory Geurts (45 minutes in first half; 3 saves) combined on the shutout of ISU.
Â
With the exhibition season in the books, the Panthers look to the season opener Friday, welcoming Western Illinois to Engelmann Stadium for a 7 p.m. start.
