Panthers Use Long Ball To Top Eagles

Will play Bradley tomorrow

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team hit five home runs in a game for the first time since 2010 and freshman Austin Schulfer picked up the victory with a strong start Tuesday at Henry Aaron Field.

The Panthers (25-15) scored three times in the first inning and put the game out of reach against the Eagles (17-18) with a 10-run second in claiming a 23-2 victory.

Schulfer (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win with 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits. He walked one and struck out seven.

Senior Sam Koenig led an offense that produced 14 extra-base hits on the day, finishing a triple short of the cycle with a 4-for-5 effort that included a pair of home runs and a double. He drove in a career-best five runs, opening the game with a two-run shot in the first. The home runs were his 11th and 12th of the season, helping him to a career-high 11 total bases on the day.

Junior Nick Unes also had a big day, setting a collegiate-best with six RBI in a 3-for-6 afternoon that included his third homer of the season.

Sophomore Eric Solberg went 2-for-4 and scored three times, adding his first college long ball. Senior Tell Taylor (2 hits, 3 runs), senior Sam Hammer (2 hits, 2 RBI), senior Derek Peake (2 hits, 2 runs) and junior Cole Heili (2-for-2) all chipped in. Freshman Daulton Varsho also homered. Pat Manning paced the Eagles with a 2-for-4 day.

The Panthers are right back at it tomorrow, welcoming a Bradley squad that is currently No. 21 in the RPI rankings and receiving votes in most polls. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
