MILWAUKEE - Junior
Nick Unes brought in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12
th-inning to help the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team to a thrilling 6-5 victory over Bradley University Wednesday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.
Â
The Panthers (26-15) looked to be in command and close it out prior to extra innings, but the Braves (29-12) rallied with a two-out, two-strike single to tie the game in the ninth inning.
Â
"We found a way to win against a quality opponent," UWM head coach
Scott Doffek said. "It was a good team win. Early on our offense was really good and then they brought in some arms and did a good job. Our bullpen did a good job and we had a chance to close it out in the ninth, but they punched a single through with two outs and two strikes. We gave the ball to a couple of guys we are going to need down the stretch and they did a great job."
Â
Junior
Mitch Ghelfi led the offense with a 3-for-5 day, adding a pair of runs scored and a pair of doubles – including one to open the 12
th before eventually scoring the winning run.
Â
Following an uneventful 10
th and 11
th, UWM had runners on first and third with one out, with Unes sending a 1-0 pitch deep to center field for the sac fly and the walk-off win over a  Bradley squad that came in to the day No. 21 in the RPI rankings and receiving votes in most polls. The win was the seventh in a row at home for the Panthers.
Â
"Team baseball," Doffek said. "Get a leadoff double, find a way to get him to third and get a sac fly from a guy that wasn't starting today, but had three really good at bats from the sixth inning on and that ended up being the difference."
Â
Senior
Tyler Hermann also went 3-for-5 and drove in a pair. Junior
Luke Meeteer hit his first home run of the season in the second, handing Milwaukee an early 3-1 lead at the time.
Â
That made a winner out of junior
Jake Tuttle (1-1), who pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 12
th, needing just six pitches.
Â
He was one of seven UWM pitchers on the day. Senior
Mike Schneider got his first start of the season, allowing a pair of unearned runs on just one hit in the first 4.1 innings. He added a pair of pickoffs, giving him six in just 9.1 innings on the season and 25 in his career to continue to add to his school record.
Â
Senior
Cal Haley pitched in a tough spot in the sixth and seventh, striking out one in 1.2 shutout innings, allowing no hits. Senior
Gunnar Eastman came on in the 10
th and 11
th, shutting the Braves down with four strikeouts, including the side in his final inning of work.
Â
Allan Beer (0-1) took the loss, allowing a run on two hits despite three strikeouts. Drew Carlile led the BU offense with a 3-for-4 day.
Â
Up next, the Panthers head to Indiana for a three-game weekend series at Valparaiso University. First pitch Friday is set for 3 p.m.
