Raiders Pull Off Upset Of Milwaukee

Panthers drop regular season finale

MILWAUKEE – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team got some big performances out of its two seniors on senior day but could not overcome a slow start in a 5-2 loss to Wright State at North Shore Elite Saturday afternoon.

UWM falls to 6-15 overall and 4-4 in Horizon League action, while WSU improves to 15-11 overall and 2-5 in league play.

"This was an unfortunate loss, as I felt pretty confident going into this match," Milwaukee head coach Maddy Soule said. "Thankfully, it doesn't really affect our conference seeding and all we can do is prepare as much as possible for the conference tournament. Hopefully the girls can learn from this match and let it fuel future success."

UWM was able to take the top doubles point to start the day after a big showing by Alysa Straub and senior Christina Colarossi. Competing at home for the final time of her Panther career, Colarossi teamed up with Straub for a convincing 6-3 win at the No. 1 doubles to start things off well. Milwaukee struggled to build off that early momentum, however, dropping the next two doubles points.

In singles, senior Chelsea Bailey did her best to right the ship. She cruised to a big win at the No. 1 singles spot, 6-2, 6-2.

Dana Shannon also secured what proved to be a convincing win for the Panthers in singles action. Competing at the No. 4 spot Saturday, Shannon won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Unfortunately, that was all the Panthers were able to pull out after a slew of close matches went the other way in the upset.

Milwaukee now will wait for the rest of the league to finish up its schedule this weekend before learning who it will play in the Horizon League Tournament next weekend in West Lafayette, Ind., starting Friday.
